Institute of Experimental Medicine of the NorthWest Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences ( IEM NWB RAMS) is the oldest Russian scientific research institute in the field of medicine and biology,  founded by Prince Oldenburgsky in 1890.

Ivan Pavlov's classic works in the field of physiology of digestion, conducted at the Department of Physiology of the Institute of Experimental Medicine, were awarded the Nobel prize in 1904.
