dogs before the experiment

Ivan Pavlov:
Physiology of Circulation Study

After graduating from Medical-Surgical Academy Pavlov became a head of the laboratory, studying the physiology of circulation. It was at that time, that he started physiological experiments on a live unnarcotized animals ("chronic experiment"). The investigations covered the heart work and blood pressure on dogs, trained to lay still on the experimental table, allowing to put needles, connected with a measuring device, into the blood vessels, and electrodes into the heart-controlling nerves.
Pavlov established, that heart work is regulated with 4 centrifugal nerves.
In 1883 Ivan Pavlov maintained a thesis "About the centrifugal nerves of the heart" and became a doctor of medical sciences. During that period he worked in Germany twice, in the laboratories of Rudolf Heidenhain and Karl Ludwig.
