Development of scientific school

In 1891 S.N.Vinogradsky - founder of ecological microbiology, world-wide known scientist - organized at the Institute of experimental medicine a Department of generals bacteriology. In 1945 a Department of microbiology and immunology was recreated under the leadership of academician of USSR AMS V.I.Ioffe. At the late 40es and 50es its works were oriented to study problems of microbiology and immunology of respiratory infections in children as well as to general problems of immunity. Later on, the department concentrated its work on chronic infections, mainly of streptococcal aetiology, on the epidemiology and clinical immunology and the associated problems of fundamental immunology.

In 1982 on the basis of this department a department of immunology headed by professor B.N.Sofronov was organized. In best traditions of V.I.Ioffe the new department was carrying out investigations in the field of clinical immunology, including the problems of immunological tolerance, worked out new immunological methods for diagnostic widely used in clinical work. Since 1991 the department of immunology has been headed by a corresponding member of RAMS professor I.S.Freidlin.

The scientific school tradition is invariable attention to applied aspects of immunology: improvement of immunological methods of laboratory diagnostics, prophylactics and treatment of different diseases.
