Vassilii G.Ushakov

Gavrilovich Ushakov was born December 21, 1865 in a
middle-class family in St-Petersburg. After the Second
Classic School in 1884 he went to Military Medical
Academy and graduated in 1889 "doctor with
honours". Starting from November that year he became
a therapeutist in Aleksandrovskaya hospital. In January
1891 he started working in Vaccination Department of IEM
and became the head of it in 1920. In 1934 he got a
professor's degree. In 1891-1921 Ushakov was a Scientific
secretary of IEM. From the first year of his work in the
institute Vassilii Gavrilovich was the head and the
organizer of the science library, up to 1926. Till the
end of his life Ushakov remained a consultant and the
employee of the library. During 1891-1926 he made a collection of 30 000 books, published 2 editions of subject catalogue, gave lectures at the "High Library Courses". A scientist, MD, Ushakov showed a real talant for the library business as well. The catalogues and arrangement of the stocks proved to be most convenient for the growing library of IEM. Ushakov took an active part in planning of the new building and in 1913 moved the library there ( from the old wooden lab.building). During the first world war V.G.Ushakov worked as a doctor in a hospital. In 1943 he was awarded a medal "For Defence of Leningrad", in 1944 - Labor Red Banner Order. Vassilii Gavrilovich died in 1953. |
