Solomonovna
Freidlin
Freidlin Irina Solomonovna born
1936, graduated from the 1st Leningrad Medical Institute named by
I.P.Pavlov in 1959, doctor of medical sciences (1976), professor of
microbiology, virology and immunology (1989). The honored scientist of the
Russian Federation
(1997). From 1991 - chairman of the Department of immunology of the
Institute of experimental medicine RAMS, at the same time - professor at
the Department of microbiology, virology and immunology of St.-Petersburg
State Pavlov Medical University.
I.S.Freidlin is the author of 210
published scientific works (162 of them in co-authorship), including 4
monographs (3 in co-authorship), 4 manuals (3 in co-authorship), a
reference book (in co-authorship) and 2 textbooks (both in
co-authorship). I.S.Freidlin has made 4 inventions and is the holder of
2 patents.
Her main research interests include
studying the problems of fundamental, infectious, clinical and ecological
immunology. Freidlin I.S. is the leading domestic expert on mononuclear
phagocytes system. She showed that macrophages and proinflammatory
cytokines play a dual role in anti-infectious defense: they may both
fulfill protective functions and take part in alteration. I.S.Freidlin
first showed the possibility of purposeful regulation of macrophage
function. She detected short peptide sequences, contained in the
structures of natural bioregulators, including proinflammatory cytokines,
which mimiced activating effects of the whole molecules.
In joint research project with
clinicians she offered pathogenetically based approaches to the choice of
immunological tests and interpretation of their results. She developed new
methods, which can be used for the estimation of the functional activity
of blood monocytes from patients with different diseases. She also showed
high self-descriptiveness of the assessment of cytokine status.
I.S.Freidlin research works in
ecological immunology identified parts of the immune system most sensitive
to the influence of adverse factors: aggressive gases and ionizing
radiation.
I.S.Freidlin has been a supervisor of 6 doctoral and 26 "candidate"
dissertations.
I.S.Freidlin is a vice-president of
St.-Petersburg branch of Russian scientific society of immunologists, a
member of a steering committee of the Russian scientific society of
immunologists and a member of editorial boards of scientific journals
"Immunology", «Russian Journal of Immunology» and "Allergology".
