History of IEM Library

On the Aptekarsky ("Pharmaceutic") Island in St-Petersburg, on the former Lopoohinskaya (nowadays akad.Pavlov) street, there is one of the most interesting buildings constructed at the begining of the 20th century.

It is the building of IEM library.

On June, 15 1890 The founder and trustee of the institute Prince Alexander Oldenburgsky had donated about 500 volumes of medical editions from his own collection, that formed a basis of the institute's library.

 

The first librarian and the head of the library in January 1981 became Vassilii Ushakov, MD. Due to his many years activity the main part of the stocks was collected, the first entry in the library inventory-book made July 1, 1891.

Originally the science library occupied several rooms in the wooden laboratory building. In 1910 the director V.V.Podvisotskii received the donation of 40 000 rubles from S.N.Vinogradsky in order to construct a new, highly specialized modern book depository.

The new building was completed in May 1913 according to the project of architect Grigorii Lutcedarsky. Majolic portal by a known master P.K.Vaulin came from the Russian pavillion in the hygienic exhibition in Drezden, 1911. At the beginning of June 1913 the library moved to the new house. The building in "late modern style", fully made for the purposes of the library, was never rebuilt and never changed it's owner.
