Location of the institute

in 1892 The name "Aptekarsky island" (Pharmaceutic island) comes form "kitchen-gardens" organized on it by the order of Peter the Great in 1714. At that time such botanic gardens provided the chemist's shops with medicinal plants.

Up to the beginning of 19th century Aptekarsky island was free from privat estates, unlike Kamennii island nearby.
