The
name "Aptekarsky island" (Pharmaceutic island)
comes form "kitchen-gardens" organized on it by
the order of Peter the Great in 1714. At that time such
botanic gardens provided the chemist's shops with
medicinal plants. Up to the beginning of 19th century Aptekarsky island was free from privat estates, unlike Kamennii island nearby. Red rectangle marks the location of the institute on the 1892-year map. |
