A substantial role in the solution of science organization questions of the Institute activities belongs to the science organizational department created in 1957. Members of the department are responsible for the functioning of a complex mechanism of governing the Institute, facilitate raising the efficiency of scientific investigations.
In 1933 a cinephotolaboratory of the Institute was included into the department. The organizer and permanent guide of the laboratory from 1935 till 1978 was a prominent specialist in sight microscopy and cinephotomicrography V. D. Bystrov. Later, under the guidance of Yu. V. Bogachev, investigations of the living cell and tissue cultures were carried out by the method of ceitrafer microshooting. The laboratory has shot more than 20 scientific-documentary films on different problems of biology and medicine and became one of the leading methodical centers of microfilming in the USSR.

Now the members of the scientific organizational department ensure an analysis of laws in the field of inventions and innovations, organize presenting claims for patents and record-keeping. A regular scientific-organizational activity is carried on facilitating the planning and reports on the topics of research work of the Institute. Great attention is given to organization of scientific forums held under the aegis of the Institute, jubilees in the history of the Institute. Annually speech-days are prepared jointly with scientific departments. The department regularly analyzes the efficiency of international scientific and technical connections of the Institute, is responsible for organization of reception of foreign guests and specialists. Special attention is given to creation of historical portraits of outstanding scientists of IEM.

Members of the department make efforts to maintain traditions of the Institute, popularize its activities and achievements of its scientists, investigate the history of science. The first attempt to organize such investigations was undertaken in 1933, when on K. M. Bykov's initiative a Bureau of the history of sciences was created. In 1941 the first volume of "Materials on the history of the All-Union Institute of experimental medicine" was issued covering the period from 1890 through 1932. In 1937 a memorial museum of the first Russian Nobel winner I. P. Pavlov was opened in the department of physiology named after I. P. Pavlov. The exposition of the museum was created by the nearest disciples of the scientist — I. S. Rozental, P. S. Kupalov, M. K. Petrova, F. P. Majorov and V.I. Pavlova. On D. A. Biryukov's initiative the first investigations of the history of the Institute of experimental medicine and I. P. Pavlov's physiological school were started by V. L. Merkulov.

Since 1983 a special group guided by K. A. Lange has started researches continuing studying the Institute history. It was decided to create a special museum by the 100th anniversary of the Institute which included the exposition of I. P. Pavlov's museum. In 1988 K.A.Lange's group made up the basis for the collective of a newly made laboratory of the history of medico-biological science.  And at last the first dissertation devoted to the history of IEM was defended.

Museum of the history of IEM was opened in 1990
